Louis-François Dauprat (1781 - 1868)Some information about the life of Dauprat can be read here. The concertos of this edition are all based on the first prints and autographs.
Nouvelle Edition for cor alto Dauprat pleaded for the division of the registers of high and low horn (Cor alto and Cor basso). The first version of the first concerto was for cor basso. In a nouvelle Edition, Dauprat published this version for cor alto. The first concerto was dedicated to his teacher Joseph (Jean) Kenn.
Dauprat’s second concerto is composed for the seconde Cor (lower horn) and was dedicated to the French nobleman Comte Nabert de la Ferté-Meun, maybe a patron of Dauprat. The second horn concerto has got a larger instrumentation than the first concerto – additional to two horns and two oboes are now one flute and two bassoons. The solo part is can be named outstanding if played with the natural horn, because for the deeper registers, the hornist needs very good scills in playing stopped notes. It seems to be that Dauprats himself was a formidable virtuoso on the natural horn.
Dauprat’s dedication says Hommage d`Amitié et de Reconnaissance. This concerto unites two versions of the solo horn part. There is a version for cor alto as well as for cor basso. Very interesting is, that the solo horn does not tune in the main key B minor (meaning Horn in D) but horn parts playing in D. This is the evidence for the excellent handling of the natural horn by Dauprat. The new edition contains the horn parts in E as well as in F, as it is more common for the valve horn players.
Hommage à la Mémoire de Punto This concerto is dedicated to the famous horn virtuoso Giovanni Punto, whom Dauprat met in Paris. The horn part is mostly written for the middle register.
The last concerto shows again the all registers of the horn. As in concerto number three, there are two different horn parts, one for the cor alto, the other for cor basso. The cor alto part reaches a’’ minor and cor basso shows virtuoso deep tones. The dedication Dedié a M. Corret - premier Cor du grand Théâtre de Rouen seems to be for his friend and college A. Corret.
First Edition The concertino was composed in 1825 the dedication reads composta per il Signore Barone di Quintella. The autograph of the National Library Paris has got the Italian title Concertino par corno mistro . “Corno mistro“ or in French „cor mixte“ means that the horn part is written mostly for the middle register, using the range of 1 ½ octaves. One of the famous horn players of the cor mixte of that time was Frederic Duvernoy. The concertino has been edited now for the first time.
