The University Library Lund in Sweden keeps the
most extensive source for horn music from the first half of the 18th century.
The music is a handwritten collection of the Academic chapel. Many of the
composers therein had somehow connections to the court in Dresden. It is
possible that the copier was a hornist who visited Dresden.
This collection Wenster contains 18 concertos
for horn - and not 17 how it is always said.

Baroque Horn concerto from Lund
for Cornu concertato,
Flauto traversiere, Violino obligato and Basso
This concerto is much virtuous in the height. The highest
tone is the sounding tone a flat. Thus it is however not singular to call
but rather " normally " for its time. As special feature is the application
of a flute together with the horn. This instrumentation is quite rare, still
to find with Telemann
or in the chamber music of Amon.
Who Mr. Schultz was is not certain. A composer of the court
of Dresden or in Saxony is however very probable. For this, Heinrich Schultz
would be applicable. He was named in the Dresdenischer Hof- und
Staatskalender ( Court and State calendar of Dresden) in the year 1729
as a musician of the Polish chapel. The library in Dresden keeps from a
Schultz three Concerti for violin.

Baroque horn
concerto from Lund
Concerto ex
Dis
for cornu concertato, 2 oboes and basso
This concerto was unfortunately delivered without any author. It represents
a very beautiful chamber music of the 18th century. The horn is very
soloistically composed, thus the title "concerto for horn" applies
here.

Concerto ex E
major for horn, oboe d`amore and basso
This trio is supposed to be composed by Karl Heinrich Graun. A
further copy of the work exists in Brussels. In the collection of Lund the
name Graun is noted however only on top of No.7, No.6 is without
designation.

Concerto ex D
sharp major
for corno concertato, oboe, 2 violins,
viola and basso
In the collection from Lund we find two concerti of Quantz.
This concerto (no.9) is written in the catalogue of Breitkopf from 1763
Part.III as a concerto of Quantz, however in F major and without the oboe.

The concerto no.3 from Lund is also displayed with an
inscription in the catalogue of Breitkopf from 1783., here however
indicated to C.G. Fischer (supplement XIV). As Quantz as copier on the
title page of Hoffmann appears is it well possible, that the
composer of the concerto no.3 was really Fischer and Quantz was the
copier. RISM indicates also Fischer as the composer.
This concerto no.9 from Lund is however real with high
probability from Quantz.

Concerto ex D for Horn, 2 Violins, Viola & Basso
This concert was traditional without an author. It is composed for a
typical "Seconde" horn, the horn moves in the middle register and uses
frequent jumps to low notes. Into this it resembles the concert of
Reinhardt (Nr.17). 2 concerts of 1. are if one has the Dresden court in
the look and takes into consideration, also hornists of the court
orchestra, Knechtel, this this concert of 2nd could hornists -- have
Anton Joseph Hampel (1711 -- 1771) been composed in the collection.
Hampel composed concerts, this are covered by the entry in the catalogue
of 1769 of the music publisher broad head, however, the Incipit are not
identical with the presented work in the catalogue.

Concerto ex D sharp major for corno concertato, 2 violins,
viola and basso
In the manuscript only Roellig is written down. RISM notes
Johann George Roellig as the composer. Because the composer was probably
from or near Dresden the following concerto is certainly composed by Johann
George Roellig. He was born in Berggiesshuebel 1710, attended the
school "Kreuzschule" in Dresden and at the expense of prince Bruehl was
taught by Zelenka and Reinhold. He studied theology in Leipzig. There he was
heard by prince Johann August of Anhalt-Zerbst on the organ and with the
cello. The prince took Roellig along to Zerbst where he became the organist
and chamber musician of the court. He became late vice-master of the chapel,
after the death of Fasch 1758 real chapel-master in Zerbst.
However, another composer comes perhaps also in question:
Christian August Roellig was born in Königsbrück near Dresden.
He became court music director in 1730 and he still was called 1741 in
this position.

Concerto ex D major for Corno
concertato, 2 Violins, Viola and Basso
For three of the pieces of the
collection is a ,, Sigr. Graun " indicated as the composer, unfortunately
without that the copyist explains, whether it was Johann Gottlieb Graun (
approx.1702/03 -- 1771) or his younger brother of Carl Heinrich (approx.1703/04
-- 1759). Both attended the school "Kreuzschule", however left Dresden after
1730. It is therefore probable that it is relatively early work of the composer,
belonging to the collection of Lund, before he lost the contact with Dresden.

Concerto ex D sharp major for
Corno concertato, 2 Violins, Viola and Basso
This concert has really virtuoso jumps also in the deep
register, a skill which particularly shall have had Hampel, the 2nd horn player
of the court chapel in Dresden. It is therefore one of the "deep" baroque
concerti, so that also 2nd horn players of today will still have a beautiful
task as soloist.
Unfortunately, about the composer is not much written in the
sources. An Andreas Reinhardt was living in Schwerin. He was there stood in line
on 20-10-1750 as premier waldhorn player. Whether the spelling is correct may be
doubted.
In the dictionary of music of Walter is
found Johann Christian Reinhardt. He was the son of a shoemaker and was born in
Leipzig on 24-12-1691. A two years lasting oboe lessons was financed by noble
patrons for him, 10 years old. With 16 he was employed as page by count
Wackerbart (Dresden). He held this office 10 years and then for 7 years was
turned on with this nobleman as musicians. He changed 1724 to the Polish prince
Lubomirsky Spisky, 1725 to prince Radzivil. Since then he was chamber musician
in the high princely service of Ernst-Augustin.

As Reinhardt there is also only a few known about "Sigr Gehra".
Probably, it is August (or Johann) Heinrich Gehra. He was chamber musician at
the Reussischen court and was organist at the main church in Gera (Thuringia).
