Federico Fiorillo ( 1753 -  after 1823)

  • Quintet for horn, flute (or oboe), violin, viola and basso

Federico Fiorillo was born in 1753,the 3rd son of Ignazio Fiorillo, who was conductor at the Brunswick court.

Federico Fiorillo played the mandolin, violin and viola. He was in Poland 1780, lived in Riga 1782 probable as repetiteur and in Paris 1786.1791 he is named as viola player in England.

The quintet on hand is the third of three quintets for horn, flute or oboe, violin, viola and basso, which were published under the name of the horn virtuoso Giovanni Punto  about 1789 in the publishing house Sieber in Paris. In small letters there can be still read the name Fiorillo in front of the 3rd quintet. It is possible that Fiorillo composed for string quartet and Punto arranged the composition for these instrumentation. However, such 'arranging' was completely legitimate at that time and was a component of the music culture.
