(Elegy for Her)

for Solo Voice with Piano and Horn

Carl Lewy was born 1823 in Lausanne. His father was the famous horn virtuoso Eduard Constantin Lewy (1796 - 1846) who lived in Vienna and played in the premier of the nineth symphony of Beethoven. He also went on tour with his children Carl and Richard. Carl Lewy played the piano and his younger brother horn. Two of these concerts took place in Leipzig, 1838 and 1843 (the special programme can be looked at here).

"Elegie an Sie" was for the first time published by Hasslinger in Vienny  dedicated to Franz Liszt. .

Joseph Rudolf Lewy (1802 - 1881)

Freundschaft oder Liebe & Das Körbchen

(Friendship or Love; Getting a Refusal - literal: little basket)

for Solo Voice, Horn and Piano

Joseph Rudolf Lewy played the first horn at the Royal Court Opera Orchestra in Vienna from 1822 to 1837. There followed an employment at the Court Chapel in Dresden. He was one of the developers of the valve horn. There are numerous compositions for horn, e.g. one concertino and twelve etudes. He played a great part in the composition of "Auf dem Strom" by Franz Schubert and played the horn part in the premier performance in 1828.

This piece of music, presented here, was composed in Vienna and published by Diabelli, numbering op.7..
