Antonio Rosetti (1750 - 1792)
-
Parthia in Eb (Murray B
deest.) for
2
clarinets,
2 horns
and
bassoon (first print)
Rosetti’s Oeuvre is
amazingly extensive concerning the instrumentation. Chamber music, especially
for wind instruments, is one of his main parts in his compositions. Beside the
up to 13 instruments containing harmonies, for example the Parthia
in F "pour la chasse" (Murray B 18),
Rosetti composed also works for smaller groups. Many letters of musicians show
their interest in ordering chamber music. This Parthia of three movements is
kept at the library of Wroclaw, however not listed in the RWV (Catalogue of
Sterling Murray).
This parthia is published in the series of the “Oettingen-Wallersteiner
Harmoniemusik” by the Robert Ostermeyer Musikedition

Information about Rosetti's Life
The source for this quintet is a print of the publishing house Sieber,
Paris. It was published approximately 1789 under the composer name
Giovanni Punto. It was the second of three quintets. Fortunately, the
print names Rosetti as the composer in very small letters.
The composition was arranged by Giovanni Punto. This quintet is better
known in the instrumentation for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon
and English horn in which the English horn was often replaced by a horn
and a wind quintet therefore arose. |
The autograph of this composition (Murray B6) is kept in the
university library Augsburg. The original composition is in e flat
major. It was not printed to life times of Rosetti. Since arranging was
a component of the performance practice and music culture then and by
such a famous musician as Punto was, the music is today not less
essential.
