Unfortunately, W.A.Lütgen is one of the composers, who are only known by their works but no biographical note. The most famous work is probably the horn quartet op.19, published by Mompour in Bonn about 1835. This quartet belongs to the standard repertoire of many horn quartets and is often recorded. In 1839, publishing house Mompour published the Divertissement pour 3 cors in Bonn. Its four movements convince by their competent using of the different horn registers. The date of origin makes it difficult to say, whether it was written for the natural or the valve horn. The third horn part would be quite virtuous for horn without any walves, but there are similar compositions by Dauprat and Oestreich. Other works of Lütgen in our music edition:
